When children understand the dangers and risks posed by fire, they can also learn about some of the small but important steps they can take to prevent fires at home or school. With this thought, UL initiated the ‘Safer Schools Safer India’ (SSSI) program in 2015 to create awareness among young students on the basics of fire safety to better comprehend, think, discuss, and act in case of fire emergencies.

UL partnered with Goa government’s Directorate of Education (DoE) and Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) in 2015 to train teachers and students, of Grades I – IV across government-aided primary schools in Goa. So far, the SSSI program has reached over 12,000 students in the state. The program’s key objective is to raise the level of prevention and preparedness of school children to minimize loss of life and property from fire and non-fire emergencies and to inculcate safety consciousness among children and the general public.

The Teacher Evaluation Program was conducted from March 19-23, 2018, and included the participation of approximately 100 teachers and 1500 students from north and south Goa. Teachers used training modules provided by UL – the Bittoo module and the UL Safety Smart video produced in partnership with Disney Publishing Worldwide. Students watched the ‘Safety Smart – At Home’ video excitedly. UL plans to continue its engagement with the DFES and DoE to reach out to more number of schools in Goa.

Following the event, students were excited to announce their appreciation of the Safety Smart program.
