Cobb County School District

In Georgia school district Cobb County’s own words -STEM education programs in Cobb cultivate problem solvers through problem-based learning and critical thinking engagement within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Students create, design, build, discover, and collaborate while developing contextual connections between school, community, work, and the global environment.

In the Spring of 2017, UL and Cobb County employed an innovative model, recently developed by UL, when they brought Cobb teachers and fire service professionals together for a first-of-its-kind professional development workshop. Aimed at bridging the gap for students between classroom learning and real-world science and engineering challenges the group worked their way through the UL Xplorlabs’ Fire Forensics: Claims and Evidence module. “Gone are the days of memorizing boring facts,” said Dr. Sally Creel, STEM and Innovation Supervisor at Cobb County Schools. “Now Cobb students are on the case – Was it arson or accident? When learning is relevant and contextualized in a real-world setting, students are more engaged. The opportunity to learn alongside REAL Cobb firefighters and fire investigators is an experience our teachers and students will remember for a lifetime.”
