The National Safety Science Campaign aims to build awareness and inform India’s children and youth about safety as a science and instil the culture of safety in their minds, thereby creating India’s next generation of safety ambassadors.
The National Safety Science Campaign (NSSC) is a unique and multi-dimensional initiative evolved from the National Safety Science Quiz (NSSQ). The NSSQ is a multi-format quiz competition inviting participation from over 85,000 students. UL urges schools to encourage their students to participate in large numbers, preferably all students who fall within the stipulated age bracket of 10 – 18 years.
The NSSC is comprised of two contests and many year-round activities including:
The National Science Safety Quiz (NSSQ) is designed for students of grades 9-12. The NSSQ enlightens students about the simple fact – ‘Safety is Science’. The quiz encourages high school students to understand and ponder about the everyday public safety challenges around them, which include road safety, electrical/ fire hazards, and cybersecurity.
The Poster and Slogan Contest is aimed towards students of grades 5-8, attempting s to draw out a combination of artistry, creativity and sensitivity about safety science among middle school children. The poster and slogan competition will be hosted digitally on the NSSC microsite and the quiz and school contact program will be held in the shortlisted cities – Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune, New Delhi, Lucknow, Jaipur, Bhubaneshwar and Kolkata – covering all parts of India. Safety Clubs were designed with the goal to broaden the base of Safety Ambassadors and deepen knowledge about safety science among children and youth. In the first year, Safety Clubs include select schools of Bengaluru and New Delhi. The Safety Club activities are a combination of classroom worksheets, hands-on experiences, and workshops, which will be mentored and closely followed by a team of experts along with teacher-mentors in the schools. Safety Awards will be given to the best schools, teachers and students in the consecutive year based on performance and accomplishments.

We make considerable efforts to protect ourselves from a variety of hazards. Moreover, the concept of safety is evolving, and therefore the need to address these threats through science and discovery is expanding. The 21st century opened new areas of focus on human health and wellbeing as many scientists, engineers and researchers explore the effects of our surroundings - what we eat, breathe, touch and drink - and how they may affect our bodies.

Nearly 1.3 million people are killed, with an additional 20 to 50 million remaining critically injured or permanently disabled, from road crashes every year. With growing urbanization worldwide and the ever-increasing demand for road transportation, Road Safety and Transportation involves diverse stakeholders to improve safety outcomes. Education and Outreach adopts evidence-based, multi-level interventions that focus on preventive strategies which enable large-scale impact.
